Bloomsburg Baseball Team Rally Falls Short on Friday

HICKORY, NC--The Bloomsburg University baseball team lost to Lenoir-Rhyne University by a 10-9 score on Friday night.

The Huskies took an early 1-0 lead when Tony Donofry (Newtown/Council Rock North) singled, went to second on a wild pitch, stole third and came in to score on a single by Kevin Ward (Clifton Heights/Monsignor Bonner). Lenoir-Rhyne went in front 2-1 with single runs in the second and third innings before the Huskies tied the score with a run in the fourth. Mike Austin (Dallastown/Dallastown) singled to lead off the inning and scored on a Carlos Medina (Lititz/Manheim Twp) double.

The Bears went in front 6-2 in the bottom of the fourth inning with a four-run outburst. The Huskies, though, came right back got in the game by scoring five times in the top of the fifth. Donofry led off the inning with a single and moved to second when Nick Ferdinand (Bensalem/Archbishop Ryan) reached on a fielder's choice. Ward then singled in Donofry with Tyler Gansner (Lancaster/Lampeter-Strasburg) following with a two-run double to make it 6-5. Austin then singled scoring Gansner to make it 6-6. Later Austin would score on a Scott Kacelowicz (Orwigsburg/Blue Mountain) sacrifice fly to put the Huskies back in front 7-6.

Lenoir-Rhyne tied the game with a run in the bottom of the sixth and got the go-ahead runs in the bottom of the eighth to lead 9-7.

Trailing 9-7 in the top of the ninth, the Huskies, though, rallied back with two runs. Ward led off the inning by getting hit by a pitch. After a strikeout, Austin singled and Medina reached on catcher's interference to load the bases. Jarrod Kramer (Orwigsburg/Blue Mountain) then singled scoring Ward and Austin and knotting the game at 9-9. After another strikeout, the Huskies reloaded the bases with two outs, but could not score.

The home team won the game in the bottom of the ninth when Zach Glass homered off Seth Pauling (Allenwood/Montgomery).

Ward finished the game 4-4 with two RBI, while Austin was 3-5 and scored three runs for the Huskies, now 5-6. Bloomsburg and the Bears will meet again on Saturday at 1 p.m. for a twinbill.
